After the pope’s death, his ring (called the Fisherman’s Ring) is removed and destroyed
When Cardinal Lawrence is tasked with leading one of the world’s most secretive and ancient events, the election of a new pope, he finds himself at the center of a conspiracy that could shake the very foundations of the Catholic Church. Many of the actions taken by Cardinal Lawrence and the other cardinals during the film’s conclave process are consistent with Catholic faith and centuries of tradition. The Vatican officially declares the throne of the Holy See (the governing body of the Catholic Church) vacant. The papal apartment is sealed with a crimson ribbon and sealed with the papal wax seal. The College of Cardinals is housed in apartments (the Domus Sanctae Marthae, the House of Saint Martha) to eat and sleep between votes.
And therefore there is no need for faith
Finally, the windows and doors of the Sistine Chapel, where the elections take place and the votes are cast, are blacked out, closed, and locked to preserve the secrecy of the conclave. Allende is believed to be the first African pope. The Roman Catholic Church has had three African popes: Victor I (189–199 AD), Miltiades (also known as Melchiades, 311–314 AD), and Gelasius I (492–496 AD). Lawrence: Our faith is a living thing precisely because it walks hand in hand with doubt. If there were only certainty and no doubt, there would be no mystery.
Greetings from the Dark Again
Let us pray that God will give us a pope who doubts. And may he give us a pope who sins and asks for forgiveness and continues. Featured on The 7PM Project: December 10, 2024 Episode (2024). Ralph Fiennes gives his best performance yet
It feels like it’s been a long time since we’ve had a good old-fashioned serious, suspenseful, “big” drama movie with big movie stars. That’s exactly what director Edward Berger, fresh off his Oscar-winning film THE WORLD WITHOUT NOTHING (2022), offers with his latest film. Screenwriter Peter Straughan (The Tailor, THE SOLDIER, 2011) adapted Robert Harris’ 2016 novel, and the result is an interesting one that could earn some Oscar consideration. And that says something about this highly respected actor, who has previously excelled in films such as SCHINDLER’S LIST (1993), UNCONDITIONAL GARDENING (2005), IN BRUGES (2008), A GREATER BRIGHTNESS (2018) and The Menu (2022). His impressive career is only enhanced by this latest role as Cardinal Lawrence, who is given the daunting task of facilitating the titular conclave tasked with electing a new pope.
Regardless, Cardinal Adivemi, played by Lucian Msmuati, is a victim of Tremblay’s actions
At the beginning of the film, the beloved pope has just passed away… and, as they say, “let the games begin.” Of course, these games are about political maneuvering, power struggles and backstage promises. Director Berger chooses to show us very little of the actual negotiations and instead highlights the different iterations of loyalty during each successive secret ballot (of course). Within the confines of Vatican City and the Sistine Chapel, Cardinal Lawrence spends most of his time researching information, criticizing others for their behavior, and dealing with the enormous egos of some of the candidates (including himself). Stanley Tucci plays Cardinal Bellini, who claims he doesn’t want the job while campaigning as the “progressive” voice the Church needs today. John Lithgow is Cardinal Tremblay, one of the most ambitious and persuasive of the lot, who may have deliberately undermined the work of another.
